Leap Venture Studio Names Cohort 10 From a Record Applicant Pool

More than 300 startups from over 40 countries applied for six open seats this cycle, the highest volume the accelerator has reported since its 2018 founding. Leap Venture Studio & Academy has finalized its tenth cohort, selecting six companies working in pet longevity, veterinary diagnostics, and wellness.

Six startups join Leap Venture Studio's tenth cohort

Leap Venture Studio & Academy has run the program since 2018, pairing in-person intensives with remote mentorship and $200,000 in funding for each portfolio seat, plus brand and marketing support and access to mentors and investors from Mars Petcare, TAW Ventures, and Michelson Found Animals.

Six startups make up the core selections, chosen for work in pet longevity and wellness:

  • Wynwood: fresh, whole-food dog nutrition prescribed and recommended by veterinarians.
  • Grub Club: novel-protein diets for dogs with sensitivities, positioned as a vet-backed alternative to conventional limited-ingredient formulas.
  • Luna the Dental Vets: a UK operator running dental-only veterinary clinics at lower price points than general practice.
  • LymeAlert: a field kit that tests the tick itself, returning lab-quality Lyme disease results in 15 minutes.
  • NanosVet: nanofiber-based technology aimed at faster, less invasive veterinary treatment.
  • SoluPet: maker of Neuronal Defense, a supplement formulated to support cognition in aging dogs.

myBalto Foundation holds the cohort's Impact Seat, a slot reserved each year for a company measured on ecosystem impact rather than growth. It builds personalized Angel Funds that help veterinary hospitals raise money for owners who can't cover a treatment bill.

Since its 2018 founding, Leap Venture Studio & Academy has backed 57 companies across 17 markets, including two prior Impact Seat picks, and the portfolio has raised more than $200M in follow-on funding.

Record applications point to where pet capital is going

Rachel Sheppard, Mars Petcare's director of ventures, called Cohort 10's applicant pool the largest the program has drawn. "The selected companies stood out by tackling meaningful, real-world challenges for pets and the people who care for them," she said in the announcement.

This cohort is also the first to include TAW Ventures as a partner, alongside Mars Petcare and Michelson Found Animals. TAW Ventures was founded by Jane Lauder and says it invests in brands "redefining pet health, wellness, and longevity." "What stood out across this cohort was how many founders are thinking about the full health span of a pet's life, not just a single need," Lauder said in the announcement. "That kind of long-term thinking is key to building brands pet parents will trust for the long term."

Five of the six startups work in diagnostics, novel therapeutics, or nutrition tied to a veterinary recommendation. Luna the Dental Vets and LymeAlert both bet that specialized, single-procedure care can undercut general veterinary practice on price, while NanosVet and SoluPet are targeting drug delivery and cognition in an aging pet population.

For operators already running veterinary or diagnostic businesses, the practical signal is where money is willing to place a bet before there's a windfall of revenue behind it. A tick-testing kit, a nanofiber delivery platform, and a single-procedure dental clinic model all win by being cheaper or faster than an incumbent, not by inventing new pet-owner behavior.

London's November demo week is the next test

The London closeout the week of November 9th is where these six get tested in front of the mentors and investors from the program's network, including TAW Ventures for the first time.

We'll see whether TAW Ventures writes a follow-on check into any of these six before year-end, a concrete first signal of how active a partner it intends to be.

Also worth tracking, whether LymeAlert's diagnostic model and SoluPet's cognition supplement find distribution beyond the veterinary channel before next spring's tick and aging-pet seasons, and whether Luna the Dental Vets' single-procedure clinic model gets tested for expansion into the U.S.

The other trend worth following is whether Leap's applicant curve keeps climbing from here. A second consecutive record pool for Cohort 11 next year would say more about founder appetite for structured pet-health capital than any single startup's outcome from this one.

85% of Vets See Care Declined at the $1,000 Mark, Survey Finds

A new AAHA-Pawlicy survey finds 85% of vets see owners decline care above $1,000, and nearly a quarter say affordability drives a fifth of their euthanasia decisions. The fix hiding in the same data: practices that recommend insurance proactively carry more than double the insured patient share of those that wait to be asked.

Same-Diagnosis Vet Bills Can Vary 20x, Embrace Data Shows

Embrace Pet Insurance's Q2 claims report shows treatment costs for identical diagnoses swinging by 20x or more, from a few hundred dollars to over $15,000. The variance complicates flat-rate pricing for insurers and wellness plans built around an "average" vet bill, in a market where fewer than 4% of U.S. pets carry coverage.
