Whisker spins its house litter out as a standalone brand
Whisker is retiring the GreatLitter name and relaunching its unchanged Wyoming clay as Lit, a standalone premium litter at $30 per 20-pound bag. That is about 2.1x a mass-market clumping box per pound, and the price appears unchanged from before the rename. For now Lit sells only on Whisker's own sites while Tidy Cats holds the retail shelf.

A 20-pound bag of clumping clay litter now lists at $30 under a brand name most cat owners have never heard of. That price is a bet that sourcing and a clean label can hold a roughly 2x premium over the grocery aisle, even with households that will never buy a robotic litter box. Whisker, the maker of Litter-Robot, announced on October 1st, 2026 that it is retiring its GreatLitter name and relaunching the product as Lit, a standalone brand sold regardless of what box a customer uses.
Same Wyoming clay, new name, no robot required
Per the company-reported release, the formula is unchanged. Lit is one ingredient, 100% naturally sun-dried sodium bentonite clay sourced from a family farm in Wyoming, with no additives, chemicals or fillers. Whisker says it clumps tightly in both traditional and automatic litter boxes, and the brand runs under the positioning "Wildly clean litter."
Bags are 20 pounds, start at $30 and carry multi-bag discounts. New Autoship subscribers pay $21 for a first bag, against a regular $30 (retrieved October 5th, 2026). Lit is sold exclusively in the U.S. at Litterbox.com, which serves as the brand's home, plus Whisker.com and Litter-Robot.com. Existing GreatLitter subscribers move to Lit packaging automatically.
"Lit offers us access to the next generation of cat lovers, even prior to their first Litter-Robot purchase," said Hew Loyd, Whisker's Chief Marketing Officer.
The premium was already there before the rename
Lit's regular price works out to $1.50 per pound. A 22.5-pound box of unscented Fresh Step Clean Paws listed at $15.94 at Walmart, about $0.71 per pound, retrieved October 5th, 2026. On the same single-bag, regular-price basis, Lit costs about 2.1x the mass-market option, which adds carbon to its clay. A new subscriber's $21 first bag narrows that to about 1.5x.
The rename does not appear to change that gap. A 2025 third-party review, which covered the same litter under its earlier LitterBox.com label, quoted $30 for a single bag. That points to a repositioning rather than a price increase, though the review does not tie the $30 to a specific bag size.
Clay is the biggest slice of the category, which is exactly why a premium is hard to hold. Grand View Research, a third-party estimate, puts global cat litter products revenue at $18.1B in 2026, with clay at about 82% of 2025 revenue. Other firms size the market far smaller, so treat the dollar figure loosely. The newer brands are not even fighting on clay. ZuttoNyan came to the U.S. in September with tofu and cassava litter sold through TikTok Shop and Amazon.
The name is doing work too. "Lit" is a word already synonymous with the younger demo and buried deep into their lexicon, and Whisker's marketing chief pitched the brand at "the next generation of cat lovers." That buyer is real. Gen Z makes up 22% of cat owners, per APPA data we covered in September. Whether a 25-year-old pays twice the grocery price for clay because the bag speaks their language is a fair test of how far a name can stretch a commodity.
The timing follows a busy year for Whisker hardware. In May, BISSELL brought a $399 automatic box to market $300 under the Litter-Robot 4, which lists at $699, and in August Whisker opened a TikTok Shop storefront. If that price pressure reaches robot margins, a recurring consumable that does not depend on owning a robot is an obvious hedge. Whisker has not framed it that way, so treat that reading as interpretation.
Tidy Cats has the retail shelf, and Lit does not
The big incumbent is moving the other way. In May, Purina launched Tidy Cats Performance+ as three single-problem SKUs at a matched $16.69 suggested price, betting that shoppers choose by problem rather than budget. Whisker is already in that aisle. In April 2025 it partnered with Purina on a Tidy Cats litter made for Litter-Robot boxes, slated for retailers including Chewy, Amazon, Target, PetSmart and Walmart.
Lit has none of that distribution. It sells only through Whisker's own sites, backed by a 47,000-square-foot third-party fulfillment facility in North Las Vegas that began shipping Whisker orders in July. The company-reported purpose of that site is to support a growing litter business and broader U.S. distribution.
If we had to guess, Lit stays a direct channel for a while and works mainly as a retention tool for GreatLitter's existing subscribers. A listing in Whisker's TikTok Shop or on a retailer's shelf would be the first sign it is a consumer brand in its own right.
Until then, it is a rename with ambitions.
