FDA approves Zoetis' concentrated Convenia for dogs, due at clinics in early 2027

Zoetis said on October 20th, 2026 that the FDA approved Convenia RTU for Dogs, a ready-to-use cefovecin injection at twice the original's concentration. It reaches veterinarians in the first quarter of 2027, with a generic of the original Convenia already approved.

FDA approves Zoetis' concentrated Convenia for dogs, due at clinics in early 2027

Zoetis has FDA approval for Convenia RTU for Dogs, a ready-to-use version of its single-shot antibiotic that fits the same dose into half the volume, the company said on October 20th, 2026. It reaches veterinarians in the first quarter of 2027.

The pitch is built around bigger dogs. Zoetis says the formulation is designed for "dogs of all sizes" and names medium and large breeds as the patients it helps most.

Half the volume matters most for large breeds

The two labels show the change. Original Convenia ships as a freeze-dried powder that clinics mix to 80 mg/mL before injecting.

Convenia RTU comes ready to use at 160 mg/mL with the same dose per pound. So an 80-pound dog gets 1.8 mL instead of 3.6 mL, and nobody has to reconstitute a vial first.

It comes in a 10 mL multi-use vial that stays refrigerated and has to be used within 56 days of the first puncture, according to the prescribing information.

Zoetis calls the new version bioequivalent to Convenia, which the FDA first approved on April 25th, 2008. As with the original, one injection by a veterinary professional can cover up to 14 days of treatment for susceptible bacterial skin infections, including superficial pyoderma, abscesses and wounds.

Zoetis is selling compliance to owners who skip pills

The company leans on owner behavior. It cites two canine studies in which only 27% of owners gave short-course antibiotics at the correct intervals, and a 2008 study in which 86% of dogs needed just one cefovecin injection to clear the infection.

"Anyone who has tried to give a dog pills for a week or two knows how challenging it can be to stay on schedule," said Abhay Nayak, who runs Zoetis' U.S. commercial operations.

The RTU version is for dogs only. Zoetis says it should not be used in cats because of the risk of toxicity, which leaves the original as the labeled option for feline abscesses and wounds. Reported side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite and lethargy.

A generic of the original raised the stakes

In June 2025 the FDA approved the first generic cefovecin for dogs and cats, from Qilu Animal Health Products. It is a copy of the original Convenia.

Zoetis has said the generic is costing it sales. In its first-quarter 2026 results, the company blamed an 11% drop in U.S. companion animal sales on softer demand and more competition. Generic pressure on Convenia and Cerenia also contributed, as we noted in our Q1 breakdown.

Those same results listed a Canadian approval for the concentrated formula, so the U.S. clearance follows one north of the border.

For clinics, the change lands in early 2027, with one vial that skips the mixing step and halves the shot for a big dog.
